As part of the redevelopment of Boulevard Anspach, the City of Brussels requested the removal of the existing canopies — an intervention that uncovered an original canopy, partially preserved beneath a later structure. The project evolved into a faithful restoration and reinstatement of the historic canopy. Original metal elements — columns, beams, tie rods, and crossbars — were carefully dismantled and restored by a craftsman specializing in iron work.
Archival research dating back to 1923 revealed a central arch that once framed the entrance to the hotel within the building. These findings guided the accurate reinstatement of the canopy in accordance with its original design. The restored structure is supported by a tie rod system reusing the original anchor points, supplemented by four decorative brackets —now lost — redesigned and reproduced from archival documents.
The canopy is covered with hammered glass, consistent with the materials of the period and with a broader commitment to highlighting Brussels' architectural heritage.
